I grew up in an OLD farm house. Over 150 years old. You expect to hear noises from really old houses, but here's the thing.
There often seemed to be someone walking around upstairs at night. I remember more than one occasion when I heard footsteps upstairs. This was not just the intermittent, random bump or creak. It was the unmistakable, rhythmic sound of footsteps. Sometimes they stayed in one room, other times they moved all over the upstairs.
I would be in my bed and hear them. Oh, Dad's up there, working on his plants, I would think. No, he's right there. I could see every family member out in the living room, yet the sounds continued. I never mentioned it to anyone when I was young, but found out after growing up that my siblings had all heard the sounds too, as had visitors. My siblings seemed convinced the house was haunted. Some claimed to hear dragging sounds, as a chain might make. I only ever heard the walking.
Not only that, but families for about 100 years previous had reported hearing someone upstairs. I still wonder about our mysterious nighttime prowler. Could it really have been a ghost?
Have you ever heard, seen or felt something that you had no rational explanation for?

Next time you hear 'someone' walking around, just say a cheery 'hello there' to him/her/it.
No I haven't and that is a creepy story...
Yep, I met with the neighborhood cat in my room AFTER he had been run over. He just walked in (I was reading a magazine and didn't look up; it hadn't hit me that KC had no possible way into the house) rubbed against my knees, and disappeared before he came around the other end. The next day I talked with his owner and found out that poor KC had parted from this world.
I don't think that the ghost you're hearing is harmful, and you shouldn't be afraid of it. You can try to talk to it during witching hour and see what you find!
@ai_shitemo - Cool story about the cat. The house I mentioned is long gone, but the memory lasts.
@lonelywanderer2 - oh, it's GONE? TT.TT Pity...
i do'na believe in ghosties.
yes
yeah. My parents also lived in an old farmhouse. As a child, I was always terrified to go upstairs. I constantly felt a presence there, as though someone were in the room and aware of me. At times I heard noises and whispers. Perhaps it was the over-active imagination of a child, but it felt very very real to me.
no, and I seriously hope never to.
As a cat, I'm always hearing things that I can't explain...
I'm a firm believer that spirits/entities exist. Some are residual, entities that appear and continuously do the same thing over and over with no interaction (I liken them to tragic happenings, such as those killed while in battle, falling down stairs, etc.) Then there are those that are intelligent and can interact with others. My husband and I love Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunters International, and Paranormal State and have participated in many "ghost walks".
The one local theatre I'm involved in has spirits attached to it. One of the entities being one of the original founders of the theatre named Anita. Anita appears in one of our stage lights, when the light board is completely turned off, and will flash. There is some speculation that she does this when she approves of a production. No flash, and she doesn't approve. There is another young man named William that likes to hang out in the wings and watch the shows. My one friend has "felt" him brush her arms several times, she asks him to stop and he does. Another friend was running lights/sounds in the booth when he saw William walk out on stage and lean against the proscenium. He thought it was one of the actors until he did a quick head count on stage and realized all the actors were present. I've never seen or felt anything while at the theatre, but I do talk to them if I'm alone. I just call out a quick hello to all of them to let them know I accept their presence there.
I've had several of these encounters that I've only ever mentioned to a literal handful of people. Though the experiences tended to be scary there was one in particular that was extremely comforting. I had been through a terrible experience and was crying vehemently when "someone" wrapped their arms around me and held me while I cried. I was just out of high school, leaning against air, crying. I was so upset at the time nothing struck me as out of the ordinary, but when I settled down and openned my eyes to see no one there holding me, I got a little freaked out.
@Lady_Kelacy - Hmmm, that one would be a little disturbing, for sure!
Creepy!! Have you ever looked into the history of the house? Like who lived there and if anything happened to them when they died? I believe in ghosts and am terrified of seeing/hearing one. I just wonder who might have died in that house.....can you find out?
I've never had that experience myself, and I don't want to...
I have, many times in fact. I immediately get a sense for people, places, and things. I'm not entirely sure what I believe yet, but there is a big part of me leaning towards the idea that there is far more out there than we are aware of, or understand.
I use to live in this old house and at night I would hear sounds.
I live in an even older house now but I don't hear anything anymore.
Your experience is scary as hell though.
One time I fell asleep in the bathtub as a teenager, with the water running. I felt someone HIT me and I woke up...and there was no one there. The water was up to my chin.
Offer it cookies.
I once had a chill run passed me during a hot summer night while I was in bed. I believed that it was grandfather (who passed away about a few year before).
Eek! That's creepy!
I've never seen a ghost, but I have friends who said they've seen some.
i wouldnt have been able to sleep!
that or i'd have been like no thats really my dad, i'ma close my eyes real tight and pretend its my dad, ho-hum ....
i dont even like to hear deer walking around outside in the winter, and they're ALIVE.
"No rational explanation for?"
Women
humans.
Yeah, ever since I was little, late at night I could hear the kitchen cabinets open and could actually here someone going through them, I could even tell you what was in them. It was so real..
Oh definitely. The house you grew up in probably IS haunted.
