You Didn't Build That- In Context
Democrats, Republicans, quit lying to gain power!!! I am NOT an Obama supporter, but I will not take one sentence out of context to make him look bad. All he said was everybody had help on the road to success. Big fucking deal. He's right.

And yet Romney is printing T-shirts based on the out-of-context phrase.
I can't imagine how difficult it is for politicians to make speech after speech without trying make any single soundbite that could be taken out of context.
He said what he meant, and then nuanced it.
If he had meant a community effort, he should have said
You didn't build that alone.
Somebody else helped make that happen.
No matter what he "meant," what he did was was strip away all ownership of individual success from the person, and grant it to a nameless, faceless collective, I think using very specific and thoroughly premeditated word choices and sentence structure.
In context.
@GodlessLiberal - Thankfully, Obama would never use anything Romney said out of context against him. LMAO
@lonelywanderer2 - I never said that. But if he has, I haven't seen it.
I don't get the big deal. We have been hearing about it since it happened. Even IF it was taken out of context, it's still nothing compared to what has been taken out of context by the left concerning what Romney has said (and I'm no Romney supporter)
"I don't care about the very poor" bullshit. He was talking about the safety net that the poor has, and he was addressing that one needs to be in place for the middle class.
"I like firing people" Bullshit. He was speaking in regards to firing a doctor or someone who provides a service that he feels is not meeting expectations.
The whole WaWa thing. He was speaking of how the private sector made it sooo easy to order a custom sandwich, while the gov't tends to make things overly complicated.
What I'm tired of is the left making it seem like Romney is the only one taking things out of context (Don't even get me started on how they took Bush's "Mission Accomplished" out of context)
I think it is, given his track record, and that of the loudest of his supporters, is the fact that his whole administration is about stripping away from individuals and giving to the collective. If this one statement was an isolated event, and there was no reason to believe that he and his party are trying to steer America into a the mindset that the fruit of labor is the property of the collective, you might get by with claiming that statement was out of context. But I'm not buying it.
taking stuff out of context is how politics works these days. I refuse to be upset by what obama said because i know very well that i haven't done anything on my own. i don't believe anything that any one of them says.
It's not even out of context. Semantics, maybe, but when using his exact wording, the context remains. He said "someone else made that happen." Which is not the case. If I have a business, someone else did NOT make that happen. They may have made it possible, and that may be what he meant, but it's not what he said.
I think folks would have more respect if the left didn't bitch about "context" and instead he just issued a clarification. But then again, the left has never really been about actual wording... (Palin NEVER said she could see Russia from her home... though the left touted that she did, it was actually Tina Fey while in Character on SNL. The irony is that the left is bitching about context when their man misspoke, but flat out wrongly attributed a quote to someone whom never said it)
The hilarious aspect of this is, Romney turned right around and said the exact same thing (more-or-less) about athletes.
It's all the typical, run-of-the-mill dirty negative politics that makes following them so depressing and turns off most of the population. They're all the same; both sides as bad as each other.
i didn't expect this to actually be more condemning of obama than what romney put forth.
benjamin franklin invented our fire departments.
Everybody hears what they want to hear, as you can see. What I heard was a response to the right wing attitude that every thing they've succeeded at, they did all on their own with no help at all, therefore no one else needs help for anything; they should stop being lazy good for nothings and just do what all the good, hard-working people of America do. So, let's cut public assistance; cut state funds for teachers, fire fighters, police and emergency medical responders; do absolutely nothing to improve infrastructure, and when they get tired of being victims, they'll pull themselves up by their bootstraps and become entrepreneurs like they ought to be. It's a complete denial of the effects of socioeconomic status. Obama basically said "You don't get it, wake the f*** up!" No man is an island, even in America. An acknowledgment of that would go a long way, but no, let's pretend that we live in a vacuum and every idea we have is original, and every advantage was created by me and me alone, and if some working class shlub did something that made my climb easier, it's because he wanted me to stand on his neck and pretend I'm flying.
All businesses were built upon the backs of frustrated employees. It's just like Ancient Egypt, but with better technology.
It's a question of worldview. Did people build their businesses with help from government (and society), or did government (and society) build the businesses with the help from people?
Obama has the second worldview.
I read the speech... I don't think what he said was taken out of his intended context... more like he didn't have his teleprompter active. I have noticed he isn't as polished when speaking "off the cuff." I was insulted on behalf of my deceased parents and how hard they worked to start up, maintain and run a business. But they were not "socialists," just hard working, middle class folk (who I was/am very proud of). They had very "old fashioned" values and a work ethic that never quit. They worked hard, (without government handouts), made sacrifices, paid their taxes and offered their children an opportunities they did not have. ^..^
yeah, actually he did say that. "you had a teacher(state employee)" "someone built those roads", again the state.
already posted my impression of it here.
@grim_truth - Liberals want to tax some of the richer folks. Tax them like they were taxed during Clinton's days in office. What is going to happen to the rich? Will they leave this country like traitors? Will there just be more failing businesses? I say give the liberals four more years and no big changes will not occur.
I agree with you on that one. He is right and he didn't mean anything all that big a deal by it, not the way I heard it. I am tired of the one commercial with Romney singing though, come on Obama campaign give that a rest. I'm not sure it's really fair to hold it against somebody that he's not a good singer. I mean, at least he's trying to sing a patriotic song about America, right? I don't think that's a very good commercial.
@Saade Punjab@facebook - thank you.
If he didn't mean that people don't work hard for their businesses, this entire speech would have been worded very differently. There would have been no need to say "You didn't build that. Someone else made it happen."
What makes me sad is that people automatically assume that since I dislike this speech of Obama's that I'm a Romney supporter
Simply put, President Obama is a Progressive; the language is very clear. Is Romney? Yep.
President clearly stated in his speech that all our accomplishments are community property. That is the meaning of his words.
If all our accomplishments are community property that means we own nothing. And since community property is managed by the government, President Obama was saying that everything we do is subject to government control.
You can only agree with that if you are a Communist.
He's learning. it doesn't matter who is in charge. They will morph into the system. This is a group effort. Now he's balancing the universe. The west is in a dark age.
Now Kaela's magic is all gone, and she is a shell.
@theKisSilent - The deluded among us hear what they want to hear.
But President Obama meant what he said. He is the author of his words so he gets to establish their meaning.President Obama was raised by Communist parents. All of his university mentors were Communists.
Nevertheless, witnessing President Obama express his true beliefs with such clarity is rare.
Taking things out of context is the media's right it seems like. I have had to bear the indignities of quotations from the Holy Quran and just chopping them up to their agenda, all during the 9/11 phase.
