  • Sweeping Change…For Good Or Ill?

On Saturday November 7 2009, a health care reform bill was finally passed, just barely, and after much haggling and amendments made to appease Democrats who opposed the bill as it existed.  The House of Representatives on Saturday night passed a sweeping health care bill by a vote of 220-215.

In the final tally, 219 Democrats voted for the legislation, and 39 voted against it.

Rep. Joe Cao (R-Louisiana) was the only Republican who voted in favor of the bill.

If you wish to read further, part of the above, although it is public information, was taken from the article linked here:

House passes health care reform bill – CNN.com

Before this bill truly becomes law, it must be reconciled with at least two other versions of the bill, and passed in the Senate.

Below is a video I learned about on the site of nudged, a new Xanga friend.  It makes you wonder about the true reasons behind the push for “health care reform”.  Remember, these are the people who want to force Americans to buy health insurance, whether they want it or not.

Those who choose not to buy insurance will be fined.  The fine will be at least somewhat cheaper than the insurance, so many people who don’t want to buy insurance will gladly pay the fine.  Who gets that money?  The Federal Government, I’m guessing.  Then, when they get sick, those people will sign up for the insurance, and the insurance companies will be forced to issue them policies.  We can’t have the evil insurance companies discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions, you know.  So the taxpayers get screwed over yet again.  But we can penalize people who are obese, and people who eat foods we don’t approve of, or (GASP) people who smoke or drink alcohol, by charging them higher prices for health insurance.

The plan the Federal Government would offer for citizens would not APPROACH the level those officials in Congress and Senate get. They refuse to accept any amendment subjecting them to have the same coverage.  I recently saw testimony in which  I heard several Democrats admit this is an attempt to push us eventually to a single-payer, Government-run program, and Robert Reich even admitted that young healthy people would have to pay more, and old people in the last part of life shouldn’t expect to be allowed expensive extreme life-saving measures, and when it got too expensive to keep us alive they would allow us to die.

Call your Senators.  Speak out against the Government taking over such a huge part of our economy, and indeed intruding so deeply in matters that decide who deserves to live, and who doesn’t, before it is too late!

  • I can say I am not pleased to find out the ‘presidents wife’ gets a raise !I mean what the heck does she do for the man that is trying desperately to change this country while in the meantime still separating it ? I can’t be upset with her just because she works for a non-profit hospital that charges 3 1/2 times higher of its uninsured patients of certain ethnicity–she is only the presidents wife, what the heck do we think the chief of staff or owner of that hospital is going to change its policy because she would speak up? Don’t think so . . . so I say lets not call it an ‘audacity’ but rather an oversight that must never be repeated nor given credit for as such a report on YouTube has done.

    Thank you for sharing

  • I totally blame her! Lol especially since her husband is now trying to pass a national bill that would tax the uninsured for not having government-run health insurance…(guess we can see where he got THAT idea from…) I could write a book on the crap this guy has done in the 9 short months I’ve known OF him!

    Good post =)

  • Here’s what I’ve always wanted to know: How does forcing everyone in the country to carry health insurance bring healthcare prices down? In a capitalist economy, when demand rises, prices rise with it, and more insured people means more demand for medical treatment. It’s simple supply and demand! How does forcing everyone in the country to carry health insurance force insurance companies to “toe the line”? Who stands to benefit more than the insurance companies themselves when they have a captive market that has no choice but to do business with them? I can’t believe people have actually bought into his rhetoric and not given it even the least bit of thought!

  • @AOK4WAY - Even worse.

  • @lonelywanderer2 - Oh man, don’t get me started lol. Let’s just hope they’ll shoot this down on the hill.

  • @AOK4WAY - I’m not even religious, and I’m praying for that daily!!!

  • @lonelywanderer2 - For that my friend, I thank you in all sincerity. Please keep on praying!

  • I am convinced if the health care bill passes in its current form, it will eventually cause so many problems that the country will rebel and it will be struck down after less then a decade. Unfortunately this will mean that there will be no political will to face the real problems with our healthcare system, and they will not be fixed for many years after that.

  • @AOK4WAY - It’s not about cutting costs for insurance companies; the problem is, if someone without insurance gets sick, they can go to the emergency room and get treatment. In many cases if they had gone to a normal doctor before it got to an emergency case, it would have been cheaper and easier to treat. Waiting lines in emergency rooms can be 6 hours or so these days.

Also, most insurance companies only have 3% profit margins, so it’s not like they are ripping people off, although Obama really likes to criticize them a lot (he is trying to put them out of business, after all)

  • This whole topic is just frustrating. Not that that’s news.

Personally, I think the concept itself of this nationalized health care could work. If it were done right. Thing is, I don’t have faith in our political system to do it right. If they could show me that they could run such a system in a way to (a) save people’s costs, (b) keep up with cutting edge science, and (c) have enough capacity and efficiency to cover everyone in a timely and thorough manner, then I’d hop on board with Obama and Democrats and be all for it. But seriously, is that going to happen? Of course not.

  • I don’t really like getting into political debates, but nationalized healthcare seems like a horrible idea to me. I don’t even have healthcare, but to know that I am taking money from someone else just makes me feel guilty. But, since I am in school, I was put back onto my parents’ healthcare plan, thankfully. Healthcare will be the same throughout the nation, right? Will it be GOOD healthcare or trashy healthcare?

It seems like a good idea when written down, but then once put into action, it will more than likely fail.

and no problem for the add. =D I like meeting new people.

  • I get the sense that this is more about insuring people who actually need healthcare, than insuring people who don’t really want it. And then when those who transition from not wanting it to needing it can actually get it at a much more affordable price than previously and or not get denied coverage.

Mitigating risk is a good way of cutting cost to the whole, and one such risk is obesity, it’s connected to dozens of health conditions, so these people are quite obviously at a higher risk for medical conditions, it’s fair to say that people with higher risk should pay more if they’re going to require more treatment. If you’ve been paying attention to how coverage typically works, insurance companies have been doing this pretty much forever in cases of heart conditions, family history, pre-existing conditions etc. That’s if they don’t decline to cover them altogether, which is why there’s a call for law mandating that people who need it actually receive coverage.

  • the government always wins.

  • Cool, I get to be the guy arguing against a bunch of people who don’t want the national health care bill to pass. First of all, in response to one of the points in the video, the reason they charge more to uninsured people rather than insured people is that insurance companies have huge bargaining power and drive down the prices, so hospitals increase prices so they can still make a profit even when this happens. The result: people without insurance get fucked royally. Now, if we admit this is true, why wouldn’t you want people to have access to health care? There are millions of people who don’t have health care because they can’t afford it and their jobs don’t provide it to them. So giving them a way to actually stay out of debt when they get pneumonia just seems like common decency to me.

@AOK4WAY - It forces prices down because there is another option that costs less. Basic economic theory states that if there is market competition, people will go for the lowest prices. This forces other companies to lower their prices to compete with the lowest-cost company, so prices go down all around the market. Unfortunately, I suspect that most insurance companies will lower the price of their product not by giving less money to the CEO and cleaning up their bureaucracy, but rather lowering the quality of their product. And this is even if they decide to lower prices at all, since insurance is a business with too many pools and other such things that they may not have to worry. But I hope it works and insurance can finally become affordable to the average American.

  • I was looking for this $15,000 fine I have seen being used. I cannot find it on any of the major news networks or their online sites. I asked someone who has the bill on their computer, they said they cannot find it in there either. I wonder where that came from.

I do not know if this bill is the correct bill to have been passed. But I do think Warren Buffett is correct that Healthcare does need to be reformed.

  • Just reading this makes me feel sick to my stomach

  • Health care and insurance needs reform…but I don’t think this is the way…. Thanks for sharing this info. It was helpful to me…and it was interesting to read the comments people left.

    HUGS!

  • @Paul_Partisan - Most agree on that; it is just the details that need to be ironed out.
