  • As Obama Speaks, I Dream Of The Future

I often have extremely detailed dreams about whatever is happening on television while I sleep.  The morning of September 23, 2009, as Barack Obama gave his first address to the United Nations, I had the following dream.
    ——————————————————————————————————————————
I am walking on the edge of a model world.  I can see how everything is neatly laid out.  A voice booms out from somewhere above me, laying out his goals for the future of the World.  That voice belongs to United States President Barack Obama.
He tells us that he wants all citizens of the World to live in peace, all ruled by International Law.  He wants all Nations to have the right to have nuclear energy.  Regarding nuclear weapons, he wants all Nations to follow nuclear non-proliferation, and eventually complete nuclear disarmament.  No nation, he says, should assert dominance over another.  Instead, all should work together as partners.
The Voice Above talks about wanting all citizens to purchase health insurance.  Everyone will receive a free college education, in exchange for which they will be required to serve a period of “mandatory volunteer work for the Government”.  Mandatory volunteer work?  Something about that doesn’t sound right.
I walk through a stark hallway, seeking where I will spend my own future. The Voice lays out what all citizens need to do to ensure the success of our Civilization.  I ask one person walking beside me, “What if we just want to stay home playing video games?”  He laughs, both of us made uncomfortable by my speaking against the unseen power of The Voice.
The Voice talks about all races, and all Nations, being equal.  This, of course, seems a noble goal, but can it be legislated?  People of indeterminate race are all around me.  Their features, and even their shapes, blur and change as they move quickly along.  They make derisive remarks and attack me, a white male, as they pass me by.
I enter an area where a military attack is being prepared for.  Nobody objects to a civilian being in a war zone, and I wonder why.  Then I realize the truth.  All in this attack happens in an orderly fashion, as if the outcome is already determined.  It’s essentially a perfectly acted-out play simulating War, as if Mankind still fights for something.
I enter an area of industry.  All is pipes and mechanical equipment.  This is one of the places workers are needed, but it is not for me.  I love the freedom of country living too much for that.
I see an exit that leads to country fields, and head that way.  Perhaps my future lies in the countryside.  Sure enough, there are beautiful fields stretching out, with an occasional tree, but somehow it all seems artificial.  There are no animals, or people, to be seen anywhere.  Each fenced-in field is of an identical size, the trees are evenly spaced, and there is the occasional armed soldier or military tank placed so that it can keep everyone in line.
It comes to me that in Obama’s vision for the future of the World, there is no true personal liberty, nor chance for following one’s own goals in pursuit of financial success.  The chances to live in different surroundings serve merely to give the illusion of freedom of choice.  This is a Socialist World.  All resources are to be shared equally by all people.  Everyone lives exactly the same as everyone else, except for performing different functions to serve Society.  It doesn’t matter what you do, or how hard you work, you will not have more or less than anyone else.  Peace comes at a cost.  It will last only if you are doing exactly as The Government expects you to do, and you are being watched at all times.

  • I don’t know, it seems a bit of a stretch to say this is what Obama wants. Realistically speaking even the French have given up on socialism. Heck, even the Russians did.

If I had to guess what Obama wanted, I would say it’s something similar to Flexicurity in Denmark, which is actually kind of sweet.

  • Wow, interesting dream you had. It sounds more like a nightmare to me.

  • It’s an Orwellian Nightmare. Although, I do agree with your take on things, I think it will actually be much worse

  • This was a real true dream you had??

  • @sweetlovinlife - Yup, while he was addressing the United Nations.

  • wowsas that is scary..it bad enough to have a dream of the President but to been about that…scary.

  • Obama again?  Errr… no comment!

  • mandatory volunteer work,,, hahahahaha,,, ive heard him bring that up havent i??  i dunno,, i forget,,, ive seen it before tho…

you have quite an assortment of comments here,,, some seeing ears as doing harm to the us,,, some dont seem to think so,,,

i like this one,,,  ” it seems a bit of a stretch to say this is
what Obama wants. Realistically speaking even the French have given up
on socialism. Heck, even the Russians did.”

what do you call 200 men with their hands in the air??  answer,, the french army…
russia fell,,, and i believe they are currently trying to regain their power over the people…

france,,, a seemingly exotic place to some i guess,,, what is france?  or what would france be if not for the u.s.?  now theres a bunch of folks id take an example from,,,, not.

we dont know what socialism is,,,,  its a good idea,,, in theory,, however theory goes in the dumpster when you have a government involved in maintaining it,,, socialism is,,, best left for socializing….

where the problem lies here,,, once we find out socialism isnt for us,,, hahahahaha,, its a little late,,, and whos gonna come bail us out of it?   france?  china?  iran?

you ever paint yourself into a corner?  probably not,,, you probably try not to… somebody isnt trying here….

i often wonder if my comments make any sense,,, by the time ive finished ive long forgotten how i started  off,,,,

  • Big Brother is Watching You…. sounds like 1984!!!!!

are you for real you had this dream.

  • in these times of manufactured problems they will need a manufactured messiah… seven years and counting. seven years.

  • as for peace, this we will have. as slaves. the true fathers of this land, the indians, at least some of their tribes, describe peace as it is meant to be. i encourage you to read, if you already haven’t, texts from the Lakotas…

  • @normality_dreamer - I had this dream as Obama addressed the United Nations  the other morning.

  • Strange. I usually end up with night terrors after Obama is done speaking.

  • creepy and chilling. i hope America wakes up soon…

  • As conservatives indulge in bizarre fantasies about Orwellian oppression, I wonder why they didn’t have such dreams when George Bush was busy overstepping his power.

  • @transvestite_rabbit - Haha. I wonder the exact same thing. I never once heard about a conservative speaking out about George W. Bush and Cheney until now that they are being called on their hypocrisy. Now they all say, “Well, uhhhh, I didn’t like Bush either. I’m not actually a Republican.” You liked him enough to vote for him! Twice! I wish I could rec comments.

  • @transvestite_rabbit - This move toward Globalism has been happening, in increments, for years.  Way before Obama, or George W Bush, ever thought about the Presidency.  Politicians of both parties are guilty of it, and the citizens are guilty of allowing it to be done.

  • @lonelywanderer2 - Great.  Next time I hear someone compare Obama to Hitler, I expect him or her to add “Bush was a Nazi too.  We just waited ’til he was out of office to complain about it because…”

  • @transvestite_rabbit - @scrambledmegsntoast - Why is it those who thought Obama was our “Hope for change we can believe in” now defend his actions by saying “Bush did it, too, Bush did it, too!” ???   It’s like listening to a bunch of children.  Sheesh!

  • @lonelywanderer2 - I am not defending anything. I am pointing out the hypocrisy of those who attack him. If I am acting like a child for simply stating my opinion, just let me know. I will be happy to not bother reading your posts in the future. I have very little interest in Xanga anymore for the very reason that most people seem unable to discuss anything without resorting to insults or condescending remarks.

  • @lonelywanderer2 - I did nothing of the kind.  I just can’t understand why all the repubs are in screeching hysterics about Obama, when as far as I can see, he’s just Bush lite.

  • @scrambledmegsntoast - You did nothing wrong, nor did I mean to insult you, or @transvestite_rabbit either- .  I included you because you essentially said you had the same reaction to my post as @transvestite_rabbit -   It just seems a reflexive thing for some people to refer back to Bush when Obama is criticized.  I have been speaking out against ever-expanding Government way before either of them were around.  I don’t trust ANY of those in power implicitly.

  • Thank you for sharing this.

  • This is a very interesting dream you’ve got here. And comments.

I have it in mind to write at some point about the great divide we’re facing. I don’t look forward to the (continuing) loss of personal liberties, but at the same time, I find it hard to envision a world with one trillion plus people living successfully by the same laws that governed a much smaller world population. It’s quite a sticky predicament.

I guess what it all comes down to is, do different times call for different measures?

I think the answers of old are still more like what we need in the future, but it depends on the kinds of choices we make as a collective. Can we lead cleaner, simpler lives? Or will we paint ourselves into an ecological corner ( @mejicojohn - like the way you put that) that requires a socialist or communist solution? If we can’t start to turn these corners for ourselves, eventually we will be told what to do. For those of us who don’t like to be told what to do, it will not be a happy day.

  • I must agree with your assessment here. ‘Tis true!

One of your commenters said Obama is “Bush lite.” I would say it’s more like Obama is Bush in overdrive on steriods.

  • Heh. So Obama is a socialist, just like FDR was with the New Deal?

  • @flatpick46 - Bingo!
@GrassUnderMyFeet - Right!  Not necessarily, just wondering where we’re headed.

  • ryc:
    Thanks. :]
    *hugs back*

  • @transvestite_rabbit - hmm, seems as if you haven’t been listening to the majority of intelligent, aware conservatives. I, for one, was very vocal about my disapproval of the Bush administration(during all 8 years of his presidency). and now that I’m even more informed about politics and the world around me, I’m just as vocal about my unhappiness under the Obama regime.

  • @ShamelesslyRed - It would be much worse simply because the dreamworld is no real place. You can’t get there from here and whenever the attempt is made many millions are killed because humans cannot all be turned into passive creatures with no goals of their own.

  • I dream of a time we elect a God fearing, 100% pro life constitutionalist president and congress…

  • Dreams can be so powerful, especially dreams like this. Good thing you recorded it.

It’s a little scary…light a slight nightmare almost. I’m not sure if I can see eye to eye with you here, but I do agree that peace and freedom come with cost. Of course, we all know this. And if people argue otherwise, they’re rather blind. It should be expected. The costs you see, though, frighten me. :[

  • this is very interesting.

  • @transvestite_rabbit - You all complained about every little thing Bush did.  Where are you all now?  Obama is surrounding himself with a bunch of radical loons, has associated himself with extremely corrupt organizations, but not a peep from Democrats.  You want to talk about hypocrisy, this is worse than hypocrisy on your part, this is criminal negligence.

  • @fleurdelisart - Hmmm…  why seven years?

  • @saturnnights - let’s just call it a feeling. i could explain it, but what difference would it make.

  • @fleurdelisart - you may not have to explain as much as you think.

  • ha ha, once I fell asleep when mcCain was speaking?  I had the most horrific dream where it was the end of the world the whole country inside the US was chasing each other around with bazookas and AK47s and SKS rifles and everything else.  he was screaming through a megaphone in the dream and etc. etc. I wonder what he was bellowing about in RL on TV during the dream.   I guess it was just his voice that did it to me.

  • I am currently ambivalent about Obama. I voted for the man, and as long as firefox still says that his name is a misspelling of the word Obadiah, then we’re not yet in a totalitarian state.

  • Commune living.  Thank the hippies

  • Ahhhhh, the new American Dream! yay

  • I remember this from the first time it was posted and enjoyed reading it again!  Right on……that’s all I can say.

  • ryc:
Thank you. I feel truly comforted by the fact that there is someone–a stranger, even– who is willing to listen and so very able to care.

    :]
    thank you so much.

    Sarah

  • Your dream gave me chills ( scary) :/ almost struck me as something that could be prophetic– at least parts of it (?)

  • @YouTOme - I agree, but I would love to be proven wrong.  More and more Americans seem to be realizing the direction we are headed, so maybe they won’t allow it.

  • I have these type of dreams…and they scare me, a lot. I hope they don’t come true.

  • @transvestite_rabbit - Actually a lot of conservatives did speak out against Bush.  I knew quite a few that distrusted Bush after the Iraqi War.  I got a chance to meet Ritter, who is now a former UN inspector, and he was speaking out against the war in Iraq long before it became popular.  I’ve never liked Bush, I despised him as a liberal, and now as a Conservative I still despise him.  Is it really such a stretch to draw parallels between America and the fascist states that we fought during WWII?  One important similarity is the take over of industry by the government, and I think you could even draw another line pointing toward the command and control tactics that have existed for quite a few decades.  The cap and trade deal displays an incredible amount of double speak, law makers have “great faith” that industry can meet whatever demands put on it, yet it refuses to have the same sort of faith when relying on industry to take care of its problems.  “Forced Charity”, “mandatory volunteership”, etc.  These are great examples pushed by law makers and special interest groups that reek of double speak.

  • @DarthPatriot - Wait, now Obama’s a fascist?  I thought he was a socialist.  Make up your minds!

  • @transvestite_rabbit - I only have one mind.  And I have made it up.

  • ” It’s essentially a perfectly acted-out play simulating War, as if Mankind still fights for something.” The most beautiful way to express one of the most fundamental dangers to our society in modern times.

I found this entry exceedingly stimulating, eerily familiar in a disconnected way. Foreshadowing? I fucking hope not.

  • Doing nothing is boring. That’s why I force myself to do something. Facebook is my present preoccupation. Writing essays and posting on Facebook, reading other’s essays, etc. Chatting with friends is also good for health. By the way, the following is the link to my Facebook account: https://www.facebook.com/shinglin.choy

  • Wow – congrats for getting the most comments by far of any poster I’ve seen now that Xanga has shrunk to microscopic levels compared to its former net volume.

Personally, I think too much credit or discredit is given to presidents for their proposals and actions given the fact that we elected them to office as well as the other folks in Congress. They are only one person and can be blamed at being ineffectual, but it takes both the House and Senate to put the President’s words into action. Therefore if the government is doing something that isn’t liked, he’s not the one to blame as much as it is Congress who lets him do it, or the people who voted him in.

Personally, I don’t think our government has much in the way of any self directed plot, as I believe they’ve been by and large co-opted by corporate interests and are just doing the bidding of their Wall Street masters.

All one needs to do is follow the money and the stream of campaigm donations, which “Citizens United” has put on steroids.

No matter who’s elected, we are moving in the same direction overall. It’s clear to see, but many are still stuck in the “Rep vs Dem” paradigm that keeps us divided and engaged wasted time infighting.

If people would just focus on what their representative is doing to benefit them, as opposed to stopping the “other side” from doing harm, most of our elected officials would be in deep trouble, and they know that.

    • I agree that too much emphasis is placed on “Us versus Them” infighting, instead of trying to do what is best for our country, even factoring in differences of opinion on what is best for our country.

  • You may like to read this book: “The Road to Serfdom”, by Friedrich A.Hayek.

  • And right now? Someone is watching us all posting and commenting on Xanga.

  • I think Obama succeeds in the International . For the home policy I cannot say since I am Franch.
    In friendsHIP
    Michel

  • Sorry .Please read “French” ! :-)

  • awwww…Michel Fauquet, you can be Franch if you want, although it does make you sound a wee bit less European =)

Mr. Loneywanderer…this made for a nervous read. We all need to wake up and get in gear.
