I'm curious about what we can learn from such a feat. I'm thinking astronauts will take samples back for an asteroid. I don't know but this is what I like about NASA as opposed to the new privately run space programs. NASA's purpose is to discover things and expand our knowledge. Once the mirrors ground by GM were fixed Hubble gave us an amazing look into the Universe, for example. Privately run space programs are for profit so what is the plan? To offer ultra wealthy people tickets a ride into space like a high-priced carnival ride. That's all fine and good but it doesn't do much of anything to further knowledge unless I think knowledge is hearing a rich guy say, "Wow that was cool" in a press conference. We are curious explorers and if not for funding by the government of Spain which at the time was Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, Columbus would not have landed in the country we live in today.
Thanks for posting this. I look forward to hearing more about what is hoped to be achieved by this. I hope I'm not let down.
Finally! An orbiting platform for telescopic cameras to cruise the dark side & uncover those secret military bases used to clone more politicians.
If we want to go into space we need to master a number of things. Towing asteroids to a moon base may end up far cheaper than launching supplies from the earth to the moon. Further, if we want to terraform Mars, given that it has a mass too small to hold an atmosphere, it would make sense to bombard it with asteroids before we build many stations on it. Adding water and desirable minerals would improve the habitability of Mars drastically. (Note: we would want to check that nothing is already living on Mars before bombarding it, etc.)
